Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery and Howard Greenberg Galleryare pleased to announce simultaneous exhibitions of the photographs of Bruce Davidson.

6 November – 19 December 2009

The exhibition at Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery, Five Decades, celebrates the fifty-year career of Bruce Davidson, with representative works from many of the artist’s well-known essays. Photographs from Circus (1958), Brooklyn Gang (1959), Time of Change (1961), Los Angeles (1964), Subway (1980) as well as recent images will be exhibited. For this exhibition, Davidson has produced large format prints of signature works, many for the first time. The scale and location of the new Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery provides an opportunity to re-contextualize Davidson’s work. Of his show Wolkowitz said, “Bruce Davidson has had a profound influence on contemporary photography over the last five decades. We are excited to have the opportunity to showcase this legendary photographer’s work in the heart of Chelsea’s contemporary art district and to introduce it to a much wider audience.”

The exhibition at Howard Greenberg Gallery, entitled East 100th Street, The MoMA Show as Curated by John Szarkowski in 1970, is a re-creation of The Museum of Modern Art’s groundbreaking 1970 exhibition of forty-two photographs by the highly regarded Bruce Davidson. The photographs in the exhibition are the actual prints, presented in the exact manner in which they were shown at MoMA in 1970.

Davidson’s East 100th Street constitutes a significant social document. During 1967 and 1968, Davidson photographed on a New York block that in the 1950’s had the reputation of being one of the worst in the city. He was first attracted to the area because of the work of the Metro North Association, a committee of residents that were actively involved in trying to improve their neighborhood. Through this association and with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Davidson gained access to the people on the block. About this work Szarkowski wrote, “He has shown us true and specific people, photographed in these private moments of suspended action in which the complexity and ambiguity of individual lives triumph over abstraction.” In appreciation for their cooperation, Davidson gave prints of his photographs to hundreds of residents of the block. Many of these people attended the opening of the exhibition at the museum.

Both galleries are also celebrating the Steidl publication of the three volume opus entitled Outside/Inside containing over 800 photographs that span Davidson’s entire career.

Also on exhibit at the Howard Greenberg Gallery will be the recently published limited edition portfolio entitled Bruce Davidson: Central Park in Platinum. The fourteen images in the portfolio were made during many of Davidson’s explorations of the park that began in 1991 and continue to this day.

Bruce Davidson was born in Oak Park, Illinois in 1933. He attended the Rochester Institute of Technology and Yale University. When he completed military service in 1957 he worked as a photographer for Life Magazine and in 1958, became a member of Magnum Agency. He has had one-man exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art, The Smithsonian Museum of American Art, The Walker Art Center, The International Center of Photography, The Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego, The Aperture Foundation, and The Foundacion Cartier-Bresson in Paris. He has received numerous grants and awards including two grants from the National Endowment of the Arts, a Guggenheim Fellowship, The Lucie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Documentary Photography in 2004 and the Gold Medal Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Arts Club in 2007. His photographs have appeared in numerous publications and his prints have been acquired by many major museums worldwide. He has also directed three films.

Davidson continues to lecture, conduct workshops and produce astounding images.

Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery is now located at 505 West 24th Street, New York, NY.

Clark | Oshin Gallery is pleased to present the works of two photographers, Joshua Paul and Felipe Dupouy in a joint exhibition at the gallery’s Miracle Mile location at The Icon, 5450 Wilshire Bvd., Los Angeles, California. An opening artist reception is scheduled for September 19, 2009 from 6 -9 p.m. The exhibition will continue through November 14th.

Joshua Paul’s photographs are built on his belief that even today, the world still retains its romance. Out of that belief he has become one of the foremost travel photographers in America. For his series “The Arctic,” he crossed the frozen ice of the 900 mile Northwest Passage on a military icebreaking ship. Drawing his influences from the early documentary work of Lartrigue, Kertesz and Cartier-Bresson, Paul’s vision of the Arctic Ocean gives the viewer a true sense of what it means to experience the sound, texture and color of ice, salt, wind and sea.

While his interests vary, he takes the same passionate, yet non intrusive approach to all his subjects, from paddling the Mekong River in China to the Amazon on a Balsa wood raft, to the Crocodile infested Lugenda River in Mozambique. In those photographic studies as in “The Arctic,” Paul’s sense of discovery is complimented by a cinematic eye and a rich color sensibility.

Every bit as passionate, Felipe Dupouy’s world revolves around a love of three things: surfing, riding his motorcycle and taking pictures. It’s all about adventure. Photography is another way of asking, “what’s around the next corner?” Dupouy’s most recent body of photographs, “Bird Flew”, was shot in downtown Los Angeles, and it is his most abstract work to date. Working with a muted palette, “Bird Flew” locates elements of nature in an urban ecosystem. In contrast to his early work documenting the beauty amid erosion of a city environment, “Bird Flew” reflects a nature dominating the man-made world and thriving in spite of it.

A native of Santiago, Chile, Felipe Dupouy is a graduate of Art Center College of Design and has photographed many corners of Los Angeles over the last decade. His photographs of the city echo it’s many incarnations from the austere to the grandiose as well as the achingly eroded. Dupouy’s Los Angeles reflects a poetic solitude inherent in being a small fragment in an epic city.

As a photographer, I am sustained by the rhythms of everyday life: the routines of herding and fishing; the chanting of prayers and the hawking of wares. Where do humans sleep? How do we feed ourselves? How do we keep warm? For me, documenting the infinitely varied ways we meet these fundamental human needs has proven to be a profound journey.

The sequence of images in the new book are not tied to specific events or cultures, but is instead suggestive of the vast tapestry of human experience and my chance encounters with silhouette and shadow, water and light, spire and sky. In The Unguarded Moment (Phaidon 2009), as in South Southeast, its companion volume, I wanted to create for the reader a visceral sense of the beauty and wonder I ‘m confronted with during my travels when the surprise of the strange rubs against the delight of the familiar.

These frictions—between past and present, the sacred and the profane, the domestic and the exotic—invigorate me. My impulse is to share them, to draw a circle of stillness around them so they can touch and inspire others. “A travel book has the capacity to express a country’s heart—and perhaps the heart of the traveler too,” writes Paul Theroux, but only if it “concentrates on people in their landscape.” This is what I have tried to achieve in these pages.

When people ask me what they should do to become a photographer, I seldom mention cameras or technique. I say, “If you want to be a photographer, first leave home.” And as Paul Theroux further advises, “Go as far as you can. Become a stranger in a strange land. Acquire humility.”

In the end, I can’t imagine another way of being. My life is shaped by the urgent need to wander and observe, and my camera is my passport. Here are the results of this restless curiosity—a selection of those unguarded moments I was fortunate enough to witness.

~Steve McCurry

Upon Fionn Reilly’s arrival at her secluded Woodstock, NY house, avant garde jazz composer Carla Bley swiftly marched him to a neighbor’s pond, sat down on the end of a jetty, pulled a range of strange expressions and pretty much defied him to take a lousy picture. Fionn listened to her brand new CD—Appearing Nightly (Carla Bley & Her Remarkable Big Band)—on his short drive home. Sometimes photographing is too easy. Thanks Carla.

Memories of Carla’s first gig from Peter Aaron’s article in Chronogram <http://www.chronogram.com/issue/2008/12/Music/Avant-Goddess> “My first performance was in a church recital when I was four, I played ‘Three Blind Mice’ on the organ. My folks taught me piano at home, but when I was eight I bit my mom after she criticized my fingering. So that was the end of piano lessons. So then I went to school to learn to be a dishwasher.”

Cala Bley in case you do not already know is one of America’s foremost jazz talents. More about Carla on her website, http://www.wattxtrawatt.com/
